RACISM THROUGH THE LENS OF WHITE PRIVILEGE:

A SPIRITUAL QUEST

 Saturdays: September 26, October 3, October 10.  11:00 – 12:15 MDT

This event is sold out

White people often experience race and racism as belonging to others rather than being our issue as well. We need to become aware that we are an integral part of systemic, structural, and institutional racism. As we who have unearned advantages come to terms with our white privilege, we become more effective in dismantling institutional oppression and unjust systems. This work is an essential part of our spiritual journeys as it guides our discovery of who we are and how we are called to be in this turbulent time.

Session 1  White Fragility

White people usually experience discomfort in talking about race. We have many ways to avoid honest conversations with our white family and friends.  We will attend to our own patterns of avoidance so that we may more readily remain present and engaged in these uncomfortable situations.

Session 2   White Privilege

If we are white we have had and continue to have privilege and unearned advantages. Together we will examine the lived experience of white privilege. We will tell stories as a way to acknowledge how white privilege has benefitted our lives.

Session 3   White Supremacy

The United States was founded on white supremacy. We will explore the history of slavery, the period of reconstruction and Jim Crow laws that are the roots of today’s inequality. We will search our souls to understand how we contribute to the reality of systemic racism.

Each session will include a centering practice, storytelling, reflection time, breakout rooms and large group sharing. A bibliography will be provided.

Participation in the webinar is free. We suggest a donation to SDCO that will be given to Soul 2 Soul Sisters: A fiercely faith-based, Black Womxn-led, racial justice organization focused on Black healing and Black liberation.

NOW AVAILABLE: A recording of the three sessions will be available to participants for $5, members of SDCO for $15 and non-members for $25.  PURCHASE HERE

Jane Vennard’s Biography

JaneVennard.png

Reverend Jane Vennard was called to the ministry of teaching and spiritual direction and ordained in 1987 by the United Church of Christ. She is retired senior adjunct faculty of spiritual formation at the Iliff School of Theology, a spiritual director in private practice and the author of eight books.

After a surprise awakening to her own white privilege, and her subsequent and ongoing study of racism, Jane realized she had unwittingly ignored an important aspect of her spiritual journey. Wanting to share her experience, she offered workshops in a number of churches and wrote an article for Presence magazine. Her invitation to participants in workshops and webinars is to simply open their eyes and hearts to what is real, moving the information about racism from their heads to their hearts.
