MacrinaScott.jpgTopic People who come for spiritual guidance have received from our culture a gloomy picture of aging. The spiritual director has the opportunity to model and communicate a different vision. Aging is a call to adventure, a time for new kinds of spiritual growth and roles as elder in family, church and society. We will reflect on the vision of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and share our own experiences of companioning persons through the journey into elderhood.

Presenter Macrina Scott, OSF, is a Franciscan sister, former director of a program of adult biblical education for the archdiocese of Denver, author and retreat director. She has been trained by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi's Spiritual Eldering Institute to facilitate programs on spiritual growth in the later years. She directs Wisdom Center, which offers a year-long program as well as shorter events for individuals of all faith traditions who choose to age consciously.

KentPortraitWeb.jpgLiving Simply, Gratefully, Poetically — with Kent Ira Groff
“How can you accompany people yearning to be genuine in a cluttered, fear-based culture?”

Dr. Kent Ira Groff began this workshop by exploring how spiritual guides can create meaningful connections with spiritual seekers who may not know of the ancient practice of spiritual direction.
“What's the difference between promoting vs. presenting yourself?” Ignatian spirituality weaves simplicity and gratitude, intellect and imagination, scripture and discernment.

    Kent Groff
is a spiritual director, retreat leader, and poet writer. His new book Facing East, Praying West: Poetic Reflections on the Spiritual Exercises (Paulist Press) offers
poetry for retreats and spiritual companioning.

Discovering and Following Your Sacred Path — with Lauren Artress
    The 2010 Colorado Spirituality Conference

Our theme  We live in a time when the traditional religious containers are losing their attraction. Belief is being replaced by a hunger for direct experience, inner wisdom is valued over external authority and an awareness of a global spirituality is opening up closed belief systems. Amidst this paradigm shift the hope of finding our way to spiritual nourishment, let alone guiding others, can be a challenge. The metaphor of the Path is emerging rapidly in our consciousness. It is a universal symbol that may have the power to knit together the seeking mind and the longing heart.

Our conference speaker  The Reverend Dr. Lauren Artress, pioneer of the contemporary worldwide labyrinth movement, is Canon of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. She is the author of Walking a Sacred Path: Rediscovering the Labyrinth as a Spiritual Practice, The Sand Labyrinth Kit and The Sacred Path Companion: A Guide to Walking the Labyrinth to Heal and Transform (Putnam/Riverhead Books, New York). Dr. Artress is Founder of Veriditas, a nonprofit organization that introduces people to the healing and meditative powers of the labyrinth. She travels worldwide offering workshops and lectures, including a yearly program in Chartres, France. Dr. Artress—Episcopal priest, spiritual director, and licensed marriage and family therapist (California)—is on the Editorial Board of Presence, the quarterly journal of Spiritual Directors International.

MichelleDanson-sm.jpgContinuing Education for Spiritual Directors with The Rev. Michelle Danson St. John's Cathedral, Denver

Topic  Are you meeting people who are confused and unsettled by the rapid changes we are encountering in the 21st Century? Do you find that you are encountering people who are struggling with the role of the church in their life? Do you find yourself increasingly directing people who describe themselves as “Spiritual and not Religious”? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” then this workshop is for you! Michelle integrates her study of quantum physics with years of spiritual formation to lead us through a paradigm shift that will show us how the Ancient Art of Spiritual Direction is an essential and integral piece of the Emerging Church.

Click here to watch a brief video with author Phyllis Tickle about "The Great Transition" to which Michelle refers.

Presenter  Michelle received an honours degree in Physics at the University of Durham, England, followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She has taught in schools in England and Scotland. For many years she was an “executive homemaker” raising her four children. She earned her M. Div. at the Iliff School of Theology, Denver, and has a Certificate in Christian Spirituality from The General Theological Seminary in New York City, where she was Parish Spiritual Director for a large parish. She is an Episcopal priest, spiritual director, retreat leader, educator, and a commissioned facilitator for Contemplative Outreach, Ltd.

Michelle currently works as a supply priest, has a private practice of spiritual direction called “Living Well,” and is a facilitator and presenter with the Benedictine Spiritual Formation Program, based at Benet Hills Monastery, Colorado Springs. She is widowed and remarried, the mother of four adult children and lives near Boulder, Colorado.

MargieWeb1.jpgWalking with Wounded Souls — with Dr. Margaret Arms
    A Professional Development Workshop for Spiritual Directors, Saturday, November 7, 2009, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Topic  What is the spiritual impact on survivors of different trauma experiences? Are they the same? How do you companion a traumatized directee from spiritual despair to hope? These are some of the questions we spiritual directors ask as we work with trauma survivors. This workshop will provide a conceptual framework of the core issues and healing process that grounds spiritual work with trauma survivors and will offer several approaches for listening and for spiritual healing. You will learn how to heal negative images of God; how to work with the difficult questions of spiritual despair, abandonment, and forgiveness; and how to work to instill hope and meaning in a directee’s life. You will also learn to recognize and avoid some pitfalls in working with trauma survivors, especially if you yourself are a survivor. We will emphasize the importance of self-care in this work throughout this workshop.

Workshop Leader  DR. MARGARET ARMS is the Parish Spiritual Director at St. Raphael Episcopal Church in Security, Colorado. She is a retreat and workshop leader, and consultant who has presented training workshops on spirituality and trauma in the Rocky Mountain region and in Canada. She is also a licensed clinical social worker and for many years had a private psychotherapy practice working primarily with trauma survivors. She was the executive director of The Shalom Center, which worked with trauma survivors as they walked back to find spiritual meaning and purpose in their lives. She has been an adjunct faculty member teaching in the trauma track at the Colorado School of Professional Psychology at the University of the Rockies.

Intended audience  Practicing spiritual directors, clergy, pastoral counselors, or psychotherapists who wish to be sensitive to spiritual issues of trauma will find this workshop helpful.

Design of the workshop  This workshop was designed for practicing spiritual directors, clergy, and pastoral counselors. We maximize interactive and group learning. Participants were encouraged to bring their own experiences and questions working with trauma survivors. Although this was designed as a workshop and not a retreat, there was time for individual silent reflection.

SandraBoyd.JPGAllowing Grief In — with The Rev. Sandra Boyd

Topic  A wonderful book on caregiving by Beth McLeod quotes a hospice director named Eileen who found herself suddenly faced with the terminal illness of her husband of many years. Eileen says “if you allow grief in, there’s nothing like it ... it deepens you like nothing else.” That challenge of “allowing grief in” will be the topic of Sandra Boyd’s presentation. Please join Sandra in exploring how we can all “allow grief in” more willingly and fruitfully.

Presenter  REV. SANDRA BOYD is an Episcopal priest, retired from parish ministry, who continues to offer a course on Death and Dying for Regis University that she’s been teaching for nearly ten years. “It’s the most popular course in our program,” she reports, “because the students emerge from it enormously empowered for having ‘let death in’ for five weeks.”

BarbChamblesslowres.jpgThe Business Piece of Spiritual Direction — with Barb Chambless

Topic  If spiritual direction is about finding God in our ordinary life, then God must also be in our financial, tax and business activities. Barb will cover promotion (“how to get directees”) as a follow on to Pegge Bernacker’s workshop in May 2008. Then she’ll turn to the question of whether or not to charge, and, if so, how much. She’d like you to bring your questions on business expenses, accounting, income and payroll taxes, business entity, insurance, engagement letters, supervision and anything else you’d like a business expert to answer. There will be time for reflection, small and large group discussions. You are invited to bring promotional items and ideas for display.

Presenter  BARB CHAMBLESS is both a spiritual director and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). She blends these two diverse gifts to bring a practicality to her spiritual presence and a spirituality to her tax and mediation business. She was trained to be a spiritual director in the Benet Hill Program for Spiritual Direction and was a founder and coordinator for the Benedictine Spiritual Formation Program in Denver. She is a past chair of Spiritual Direction Colorado.

KentPortraitWeb.jpgLeading Contemplative Gatherings — with Kent Ira Groff

A two-part workshop  How can we create a safe environment for seasoned believers and youthful seekers to recount their sacred stories and find direction? If you feel called to lead spiritual retreats or short-term groups, this experience will provide skills for creating a contemplative ethos in limited time and for mining participant's gifts. As we model this meditative atmosphere, you will experience ways to build community, balance presentations with silence and conversation, and to incorporate prayer with music, movement, films, and art. Designing an event prepares leader's own heart and mind; out of this awareness of gifts and vulnerabilities the leader prepares the event.

The April 24–25, '09 session concluded a two-part workshop in a retreat format whose first session was held in the fall of 2008.

If you're interested in this kind of Professional Development Workshop, send email to Kent Groff.
