What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction is really not about being “directed”. Rather, it is very much about being encouraged to draw closer to God. It invites you into this relationship whether you attend a church, mosque, synagogue, temple, or none of these. Spiritual direction is an ongoing relationship in which one person, desirous of being attentive to his or her spiritual life, meets with another person (the director) on a regular basis specifically for the purpose of becoming more attuned to God’s presence in order to respond more fully to that Presence in daily life. It is a process of accompanying people on a spiritual journey and helping them grow closer to God, the Sacred, the Divine Mystery, or the Higher Power. God seeks you where you are.
Why do people seek spiritual direction?
- To seek a closer relationship with God
- To discover God’s presence in your life, the Presence within you
- To make difficult choices
- Share your hopes, struggles, and losses
- Identify and trust your own experiences of God
- If desired, to explore different prayer practices such as contemplative prayer, and meditation
- To connect with God; a source of strength, comfort, and, guidance.
What happens when I meet with a spiritual director?
The spiritual director journeys with you as you deepen your relationship with God. The journey takes place in the context of a confidential session with your spiritual director. The person coming for spiritual direction is trying to be serious about some form of intentional prayer and reflection on God’s presence in everyday life. The director is a facilitator with God, Spirit or Higher Power being the true director.
What is Spiritual Direction Colorado (SDCO)?
SDCO is a committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado and is an ecumenical group of spiritual directors. Our mission statement is: “To promote spiritual direction and support spiritual directors in Colorado.” We do this by being practicing spiritual directors; connecting people who are seeking spiritual directors; being active in the faith communities we attend; offering continuing education programs six times a year and hosting a weekend fall spiritual retreat. Our events are open to anyone and we invite you to become a part of our community by participating in any or all of our events. Our community encourages greater awareness of spirituality throughout Colorado. We envision a Colorado where spiritual guidance permeates peoples’ lives, faith communities and human organizations, transforming life for all, especially the most vulnerable.
