Spirituality: An Outlook On Life

Fr. Vince’s Invitation: “I’ll invite people to think of precisely how they conceive of spiritual life and present my own way of envisioning it— spirituality is a person's ‘outlook’ on life. From this point on I’ll direct our attention to resources for the continual enrichment and maintenance of our outlook. I’ll talk about worship in our life as a principle resource and devote two or three sessions on having a Gospel (in my case John) as another principle resource. I’ll refer to the Jewish wisdom of the Sabbath. Finally, I’ll give an overview of the Spiritual Exercises as another resource, specifically aimed at enriching one’s life with the Gospels.”

Fr. Vince holds a doctorate in mystical theology. His primary work has been spiritual direction and retreats. He also has lived and worked with the homeless of New York and Denver, taught theology, and directed a Jesuit leadership training program.

Three books Fr. Vince suggests for study and reference. L. William Countryman’s The Mystical Way in the Fourth Gospel; Demetrius Dumm’s A Mystical Portrait of Jesus; and Jean Vanier’s Drawn into the Mystery of Christ through the Gospel of John. All three are available from the Sacred Heart bookstore.

The retreat costs $350. At least $175 of the registration fee is due to reserve a place in the retreat. Attendance is limited to 40; we urge you to reserve your place or pay in full as soon as possible. The balance of your registration is due by September 10, 2008. Make your check payable to “Diocese of Colorado—SDCO.”

Refund policy. Before September 10, we can refund your payment(s) minus a $50 cancellation fee. We are unable to make refunds after September 10.

Registration. A registration form is available to print out and fill in. Mail your registration form and check to SDCO Fall Retreat, P. O. Box 88350, Colorado Springs, CO 80908. When registration reaches 40 participants, we’ll call to ask if you’d like us to add you to a wait list. If no space opens up, we’ll of course return your registration.

Sharing rides to Sacred Heart. Good environmental stewardship is a primary value. We’ll share information about who is coming from where so that you can arrange to share rides to Sedalia.

Check in at Sacred Heart. Checkin is between 3 and 5 p.m. Monday, September 22. Be sure to arrive in time so that you can check in, settle in your room, and join your colleagues for wine and cheese before supper at 6 p.m.
