Wednesday continuing education workshop

Walk a Mile in My Moccasins -- with Linda Cornier
Topic Listening is the beginning of serving others. A mile begins with a step. Stepping into someone’s journey requires other-focused listening. There is strength in silence. Westerners are awed when someone is articulate; listening is equally important. Experience Native American listening techniques: Spiritual directing/Traditional healing is like open heart/mind surgery. This might entail finding solutions, giving food, a plant, root, or herb from mother earth; dancing, singing, praying, fasting or becoming a mirror for others. Telling stories can help others make decisions for themselves. We conclude with praying the four directions.
My name is Cante I Wan Kab Wi (Above Heart Woman).
How Do I love Thee and Me? Self-Image and Relationship with God -- with Dr. Margaret Arms

Topic How often do we hear our directees wonder how God can possibly love them because they experience themselves as so unlovable or unworthy? Explore how the ways we experience ourselves affect the way we relate to God, and how we understand who God is. Using a power point presentation, we will explore how questions of self-esteem, self-image, and “being made in the image of God” show up in spiritual direction practice. The workshop will also include experiential and interactive work in small and large group conversation.

Presenter Dr. Margaret Arms is a spiritual director in Colorado Springs and teaches at the Benedictine Spiritual Formation Program where she also supervises a group of second year students. She teaches a class on Self-Image and Relationship to God from which this workshop evolved. She sits on the Spiritual Direction Colorado Committee where she coordinates the regional gatherings of spiritual directors.

Is this Spiritual Direction? If you work with young people, maybe? yes? no? What does the art of Spiritual Direction look like when youth culture lives via texting, Facebook, iPod, or Skyping? For any spiritual companions seeking to walk with teens, 20s or 30s, we need to be creative, intentional, and contemplative in making space for the Spirit as young people go through their spiritual, emotional, and personal lives.
Forgiveness: A Core Challenge on the Spiritual Journey with Lynn Huber
Topic Forgiveness is crucial to our growing into spiritual wholeness, yet many misconceptions about it can keep us carrying unforgiveness for years. We unpacked issues of forgiveness vs. reconciliation, and forgiveness as a matter of the will. There was experiential work, as well as lecture and dialog. This workshop is designed to allow us to explore implications for our own journeys and to look at ways to engage those whom we companion in their own forgiveness processes.

Presenter Lynn W. Huber, Ph.D., MSW is a spiritual director, educator, author, peace activist and retreat leader. Lynn believes forgiveness is a central issue both on our interior journey, and for our capacity to work in the world for peace and justice.

Like never before in the history of humanity we are aware of the essential unity of life and that what we do to a part we do to the whole. Wellness is found not in separation but in relationship, whether as nations and wisdom traditions, as individuals, or as a whole earth community. How can our spirituality today, including our spiritual practices, be part of serving this new consciousness?

picture of aging. The spiritual director has the opportunity to model
and communicate a different vision. Aging is a call to adventure, a
time for new kinds of spiritual growth and roles as elder in family,
church and society. We will reflect on the vision of Rabbi Zalman

The search for an authentic spirituality

Discovering and Following Your Sacred Path — with Lauren Artress
The 2010 Colorado Spirituality Conference

Our theme We live in a time when
the traditional religious containers are losing their attraction. Belief
is being replaced by a hunger for direct experience, inner wisdom is
valued over external authority and an awareness of a global spirituality
is opening up closed belief systems. Amidst this paradigm shift the
hope of finding our way to spiritual nourishment, let alone guiding
others, can be a challenge. The metaphor of the Path is emerging rapidly
in our consciousness. It is a universal symbol that may have the power
to knit together the seeking mind and the longing heart.

Our
conference speaker The Reverend Dr.
Lauren Artress, pioneer of the contemporary worldwide labyrinth

author of Walking a Sacred Path: Rediscovering the Labyrinth as a
Spiritual Practice, The Sand Labyrinth Kit and The
Sacred Path Companion: A Guide to Walking the Labyrinth to Heal and
Transform (Putnam/Riverhead Books, New York). Dr. Artress is Founder
of Veriditas, a nonprofit organization that introduces people to the

you meeting people who are confused and unsettled by the rapid changes
we are encountering in the 21st Century? Do you find that you are
encountering people who are struggling with the role of the church in
their life? Do you find yourself increasingly directing people who
describe themselves as “Spiritual and not Religious”? If the answer to
any of these questions is “yes,” then this workshop is for you!
Michelle integrates her study of quantum physics with years of spiritual formation to lead us through a paradigm shift that will show
us how the Ancient Art of Spiritual Direction is an essential and
integral piece of the Emerging Church.

Click here to watch a brief video with author Phyllis Tickle about "The Great Transition" to which Michelle refers.

Michelle received an honours degree in Physics at the University of
Durham, England, followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.
She has taught in schools in England and Scotland. For many years she
was an “executive homemaker” raising her four children. She earned her
M. Div. at the Iliff School of Theology, Denver, and has a Certificate
in Christian Spirituality from The General Theological Seminary in New
York City, where she was Parish Spiritual Director for a large parish.
She is an Episcopal priest, spiritual director, retreat leader,
educator, and a commissioned facilitator for Contemplative Outreach,
Ltd.

Michelle currently works as a supply priest, has a private practice of
spiritual direction called “Living Well,” and is a facilitator and
presenter with the Benedictine Spiritual Formation Program, based at
Benet Hills Monastery, Colorado Springs. She is widowed and remarried,
the mother of four adult children and lives near Boulder, Colorado.

Topic What
is the spiritual impact on survivors of different trauma experiences?
Are they the same? How do you companion a traumatized directee from
spiritual despair to hope? These are some of the questions we spiritual
directors ask as we work with trauma survivors. This workshop will
provide a conceptual framework of the core issues and healing process
that grounds spiritual work with trauma survivors and will offer
several approaches for listening and for spiritual healing. You will
learn how to heal negative images of God; how to work with the
difficult questions of spiritual despair, abandonment, and forgiveness;
and how to work to instill hope and meaning in a directee’s life. You
will also learn to recognize and avoid some pitfalls in working with
trauma survivors, especially if you yourself are a survivor. We will
emphasize the importance of self-care in this work throughout this
workshop.

Workshop Leader
DR. MARGARET ARMS is the Parish Spiritual Director at St. Raphael
Episcopal Church in Security, Colorado. She is a retreat and workshop
leader, and consultant who has presented training workshops on
spirituality and trauma in the Rocky Mountain region and in Canada. She
is also a licensed clinical social worker and for many years had a
private psychotherapy practice working primarily with trauma survivors.
She was the executive director of The Shalom Center, which worked with
trauma survivors as they walked back to find spiritual meaning and
purpose in their lives. She has been an adjunct faculty member teaching
in the trauma track at the Colorado School of Professional Psychology
at the University of the Rockies.

Intended audience
Practicing spiritual directors, clergy, pastoral counselors, or
psychotherapists who wish to be sensitive to spiritual issues of trauma
will find this workshop helpful.

Design of the workshop
This workshop was designed for practicing spiritual directors, clergy,
and pastoral counselors. We maximize interactive and group
learning. Participants were encouraged to bring their own experiences
and questions working with trauma survivors. Although this was designed
as a workshop and not a retreat, there was time for individual
silent reflection.

                Topic
A wonderful book on caregiving by Beth McLeod quotes a hospice director
named Eileen who found herself suddenly faced with the terminal illness
of her husband of many years. Eileen says “if you allow grief in,
there’s nothing like it ... it deepens you like nothing else.” That
challenge of “allowing grief in” will be the topic of Sandra Boyd’s
presentation. Please join Sandra

spiritual direction is about finding God in our ordinary life, then God
must also be in our financial, tax and business activities. Barb will
cover promotion (“how to get directees”) as a follow on to Pegge Bernacker’s workshop in May 2008. Then she’ll turn to the question of whether or not to charge, and, if so, how much. She’d like you to bring your questions
on business expenses, accounting, income and payroll taxes, business
entity, insurance, engagement letters, supervision and anything else
you’d like a business expert to answer. There will be time for
reflection, small and large group discussions. You are invited to bring
promotional items and ideas for display.

the Benet Hill Program for Spiritual Direction and was a
founder and coordinator for the Benedictine Spiritual Formation Program
in Denver. She is a past chair of Spiritual Direction Colorado.

youthful seekers to recount their sacred stories and find direction? If
you feel called to lead spiritual retreats or short-term groups, this
experience will provide skills for creating a contemplative ethos in

meditative atmosphere, you will experience ways to build community,

This workshop will explore the art of teaching prayer as one of the roles of the spiritual director. We will examine the importance of preparing the heart before new prayer methods are offered, experience some strategies that help others broaden and deepen their prayer lives, and discuss the joys and challenges of teaching others to pray.

Contemplation as an Alternative Consciousness — with Fr. Richard Rohr (January 2009)

2009 Colorado Spirituality Conference undefined “The Third Eye”

About the Conference Fr. Richard Rohr is convinced that mature religion always discovered that it needed a different lens in order to access spiritual and divine things. The loss of that older tradition is at the heart of the crisis in most major religions today. Richard believes that people with some form of contemplative practice are in a unique position to model and teach this alternative consciousness. Out of this contemplative dimension emerges both personal spiritual deepening and a worldview that calls God's people to global responsibility. Fr. Rohr's workshop included lectures, guided silence, and guided practices, so participants could "know" for themselves.

About our leader Fr. Rohr is an ordained priest and a Franciscan of the New Mexico Province. He founded the New Jerusalem Community in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1971, and the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1986, where he presently serves as Founding Director.

Richard was born in Kansas in 1943. He entered the Franciscans in 1961, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1970. He received his Master's Degree in Theology from Dayton that same year. He now lives in a hermitage behind his Franciscan community in Albuquerque, and divides his time between local work, and preaching and teaching on all continents. He considers the proclamation of the Gospel to be his primary call, and uses many different platforms to communicate that message. Scripture as liberation, the integration of action and contemplation, community building, peace and justice issues, male spirituality, the enneagram, and eco-spirituality are some themes he addresses in service of the Gospel. An internationally known speaker, Richard's travels have recently carried the message to Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Fr. Richard is probably best known for his numerous recorded teachings, and through the Center's quarterly publication, Radical Grace. He is a regular contributing writer for Sojourners Magazine and writes a regular column for Tikkun Magazine. He published a 7-part Lenten Series for the National Catholic Reporter.

His latest books are Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality and From Wild Men to Wise Men: Reflections on Male Spirituality. Among his best known books are Everything Belongs, Radical Grace: Daily Meditations, Adam's Return: The Five Promises of Male Initiation, Hope Against Darkness and The Enneagram: A Christian Perspective. His current best-selling recorded teachings are The Divine Dance: Exploring the Mystery of Trinity and Prophets Then, Prophets Now.

Richard has partnered with such esteemed teachers as Thomas Keating, OCSO, Ron Rolheiser, OMI, Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, Joan Chittister, OSB and Jim Wallis, teaching on such themes as adult Christianity, politics and spirituality, embracing the role of prophet in the modern world and presence to the Eternal now.

Recently, Richard was a featured essayist on NPR's "This I Believe," and was a guest of Dr. Mehmet Oz on his "Oprah and Friends" radio show. He also appeared in the 2006 documentary, "One," featuring spiritual teachers from around the world.
