The topic. How can we create a safe environment in which seasoned believers and youthful seekers can recount their sacred stories and find direction? If you feel called to lead spiritual retreats or short-term groups, this experience will help you learn skills—for creating a contemplative ethos in a limited time and for mining participants’ gifts. As we model a meditative atmosphere, you will experience ways to build community and balance presentations with silence and conversation, weaving prayer with music, movement, films and art. Designing an event with an awareness of your own gifts and vulnerabilities prepares you for authentic contemplative leadership.

Who should attend? Any who desire to integrate contemplative practices in group and retreat leadership and in personal life: lay leaders, pastors, youth ministers, educators, students, and those in specialized ministries.

The Leader. Dr. Kent Ira Groff, founding mentor of Oasis Ministries (Pa.) and a graduate of Shalem Institute, is a retreat leader, spiritual companion, writer and poet in Denver, Colorado. Kent is an ordained Presbyterian minister and has been conducting contemplative retreats at conference centers, seminaries, in the U.S. and abroad over two decades.

    2011 SDCO Annual Spirituality Conference

Philip NewellSpeaker. John Philip Newell, a poet, scholar, and teacher, is internationally acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic spirituality, with best-known titles Listening for the Heartbeat of God and Christ of the Celts. Formerly Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, he is currently Companion Theologian for the American Spirituality Centre of Casa del Sol in the high desert of New Mexico. Although his family home is in Edinburgh, he plays a leading role on both sides of the Atlantic in the re-birthing of a creation spirituality for today.

Theme. Like never before in the history of humanity, we are aware of the essential unity of life and that what we do to a part we do to the whole. Wellness is found not in separation but in relationship, whether as nations and wisdom traditions or as individuals and as a whole earth community. How can our spirituality today, including our spiritual practices, be part of serving this new consciousness?

Program. The program will include three major presentations, time for silence, and opportunities for sharing and discussion.

    • Friday Evening - The Ancient Harmony
    • Saturday Morning - The Broken Harmony
    • Saturday Afternoon - The New Harmony

Music will be provided by Brad Berglund.
